ii. The rate of fertilizer application shall be no less than 40 pounds of nitrogen (n) and 40 pounds of phosphate
(P205) per acre. Animal manures or similar organic material maybe used to supply all or part of the specified
nutrients.
iii. Time of application shall be immediately prior to seeding, at the time of seeding or immediately following
seeding, as applicable to the kind of fertilizer and type of equipment used.
4. Methods of seeding:
i. Seed should be planted with a drill on all slopes of 33% {3:1) or flatter. The drill must have the capability of
handling the kind and rate of seed being planted.
ii. The seed may be broadcast by hand, by mechanical spreader or by hydraulic equipment on areas that are
small, to steep or not accessible for seed -drill operations. This specification does not provide for hydraulic
application of seed application of seed and mulch in a single operation.
5. Depth of seeding:
i. Seed planted with a drill shall be covered with soil to a depth of/< to'/< inch.
ii. Seed planted by the broadcast method shall be incorporated into the surface soil, not to exceed a depth of/<
inch, by raking, harrowing or other proven method.
6. Mulching:
i. Critical area planting shall be mulched because the rapid establishment of the seeded species is essential for
site protection from erratic precipitation, drying winds and erosive soils.
ii. Straw or hay mulch will be grass hay or cereal grain straw (hereafter referred to as straw) applied at a rate of
4000 pounds per acre spread uniformly over the area. At least 50% of the mulch by weight shall be 10 inches or
more in length. The straw shall be free of all noxious weeds.
iii. The mulch will be anchored with commercially available mulch net or a mulch crimper or disc with weight
set straight to crimp the straw 4 inches into the soil.
iv. Feedlot or barnyard manure:
a. The manure must be of a type, which has 60% or more by weight, heavy chunks 5 inches or more in
diameter. Granular or powder manure will not meet specifications.
b. The minimum rate of application shall be 20 tons per acre spread uniformly over the area.
c. The manure will be applied before or after seeding depending on conditions determined by the technician.
