i
SECTION I - GEOLOGY -gcE
General Description
The bedrock underlying the subject area is of the Mesozoic
Age, continental and manine sedimentary rocks . In the lower part
of the Cache La Poudre River basin, where the subject property
is located, the major floodplain and valley-fill deposits
constitute an excellent source of commercial high quality mineral
deposits .
Site Geology
The median ground elevation of 4906 feet of Cowan Reclamation
Pit No. 2 is situated in the floodplain of the Cache La Poudre
River which is located 200 feet northeast of the subject property.
The Colorado Geological Survey' s Reports 5-A and 5-B has mapped
and designated the subject property as flood-plain and valley-fill
deposits containing relatively clean and sound gravels . Further
findings indicate an organic topsoil throughout the area with
depths that vary between 6 inches and 18 inches . This topsoil
has been penetrated by plant roots and other organic matter. The
silty clay and/or sandy silt overlies the sand, gravel and cobbles
from depths of It feet to 6k feet below the surface . The depths
of mineral deposits range from 10 feet to 15 feet below the over-
burden. The Siltstone (bedrock) underlies the gravel at depths
of 15 feet to 18 feet below the surface and extends to greater
depths . The estimated recoverable mineral deposits consist of
approximately two million (2 ,000, 000) cubic yards on the subject
property. (For a detailed report on site geology-soils , see
Empire Laboratories , Inc . , Report following. )
Past and Present Mineral Extraction
There are no present mineral extraction activities adjacent
to the subject property at this time . However, in the immediate
vicinity of Fort Collins and mostly adjacent to the Poudre River
there are a total of 33 gravel pit operations , producing as
finished product, concrete and asphalt aggregate , plaster sand,
cemand sand, washed rock, road base, etc. Therefore , this proposed
operation of mineral resource recovery would not be unique to
the general area, but would be consistent with the already estab-
lished land use pattern within the general area.
Overburden Material
A total of approximately 475, 000 cubic yards of overburden
exists on subject property, 20% or about 95 , 000 cubic yards of
the total is believed to be organic topsoil .
The above amounts of topsoil and overburden will be more than
enough to accomplish the final reclamation plan as submitted for
Cowan Reclamation Pit No. 2 .
-10-
