REVIEW QUESTION
• L.VY.V
(1)(b)(i)(c) Physical properties of each stratum within the overburden and
interburden must be discussed. Shale is the only material presently ad-
dressed. Also drill hole data must be well coordinated with corresponding
map locations so that the spatial nature of these strata can be inter-
preted.
RESPONSE
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF OVERBURDEN
The majority of the overburden has been logged from cores as
shale or siltstone. These materials occur in thin strata and
exhibit varying degrees of hardness. Weathering will affect
these rocks differently with the harder material taking longer
to physically degrade. Shales or siltstones weigh approximately
3,800 pounds per bank cubic yard and have a relative swell fac-
tor of 33 percent.
• ' Thinly bedded fine to medium grain sandstones comprise 10 to 20
percent of the overburden. These strata are commonly laminated,
and the rock will readily disintegrate when exposed to weather-
ing. The sandstone has an approximate weight of 3,600 pounds
per cubic yard and a swell factor in the neighborhood of 30 per-
cent.
