"~~ .,, .~.,
~i.0..; ....:'„"qtr,,,.
We have completed our analysis of the Nordyke Pit proposal (F1'le~iNp,;~~e`
M-85-040). Because the subject lands are private surface/Federal mineral
estate, we believe our role in this matter is purely advisory.
In our environmental assessment, we concluded the preferred alternative
would be to construct an east-west haul road north of the pit. This
would eliminate some visual scarring and potential erosion likely to
occur if the haul road is constructed on the steep slope south of the
pit. Highway department personnel do not prefer this alternative be-
cause of the length and cost of constructing the haul road.
If the applicant's proposal is approved, we recommend the attached stip-
ulations be incorporated as part of the permit. The Colorado Highway
Department (CHD) proposal did not address the removal of material off
the hill. John Hill of CHD informed me they will likely utilize a
switchback road. If this is the case, the road should be properly built
to avoid erosion and then reclaimed as quickly as possible.
I hope these recommendations are of some use to you. If you have any
further quesions, please contact Dennis Zachman of my staff.
Sincerely yours,
Area Ma ager
Enclosure
Stipulations
