VLL1GlQl JGIIGJ LCJI+llvl1U11 - 1V1111V V 1:L JCIICS Ya1,+C L UL L
• •
The C horizon has hue of SY through 7.5YR, value of 5 through 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 2
through 4. It is silt loam or silty clay loam. This horizon ranges from 8.0 to 8.6 and has 10 to 40 percent
calcium carbonate equivalent. A large proportion of calcium carbonate in this horizon is in clay-sized
particles.
COMPETING SERIES: These aze the Bainyille (MT), Colby (KS), Minnequa (CO), Rocky Ford
(CO), and Skilak (WY) series. Bainville and Minnequa soils have a paralithic contact at some point
above a depth of 40 inches. Colby soils have less than 15 percent calcium carbonate equivalent. Rocky
Ford soils have 1 to 10 percent calcium carbonate equivalent in the C horizon and have an overly
thickened and enriched Ap horizon. Skilak soils have less than 15 percent calcium carbonate equivalent
in their series control section.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Manvel soils are on alluvial fans and foot slopes. Slopes range from 0
to 15 percent. These soils formed in thick very calcareous alluvial fan materials derived from chalk and
soft limestones. At the type location the average annual precipitation is 12 to 16 inches with peak
periods of precipitation in the spring and eazly summer. Mean annual air temperature is 52 to 57 degrees
F., mean summer temperature is 72 degrees F. Elevation is 3,300 to 6,600 feet. Frost-free pereiod ranges
from 125 to 160 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Minneoua soils and the
Tyrone soils. Tyrone soils have a natric horizon.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium or rapid runoff; moderate or moderately
slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: They are used as native pastureland, or for dry or irrigated cropland.
Native vegetation is mainly blue grama, sage cactus, and needlegrass.
DISTRHiUTION AND EXTENT: Southern and central Colorado. The series is of moderate extent.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Arkansas Valley Area, Colorado, 1926.
REMARKS: Last update by the state 10/90. Diagnostic features include an ochric epipedon from 0 to 4
inches.
National Cooperative Soil Survey
U.S.A.
http:(/www.statlab.instate.edu/soils/osd/datlM/MANVEL.html 6!25/02
