VJllllil711 JCl lGS LCSI%1lt/LLUII - 1V1~V r,L JCI1C5
LOCATION MANVEL CO+KS NE SD
Established Series
Rev. GB
02/97
MANVEL SERIES
Ya$C 1 OI G
•
The Manvel series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in thick
very calcareous alluvial fan materials derived from chalk and soft limestone. Manvel soils are on alluvial
fans and footslopes and have slopes of 0 to 15 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 14 inches
and the mean annual temperature is about 54 degrees F.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, mixed, calcareous, mesic Ustic Torriorthents
TYPICAL PEDON: Manvel silt loam, grassland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted).
A-0 to 4 inches; light brownish gray (lOYR 6/2) silt loam, dark grayish brown (lOYR 4/2) moist;
moderate very fine granular structure; slightly hard, very friable; strongly effervescent; moderately
alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 5 inches thick)
AC-4 to 12 inches; pale brown (lOYR 6/3) silt loam, brown (lOYR 513) moist; weak medium
subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; about 20 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; violently
effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick)
C-12 to 60 inches; pale brown (lOYR 6/3) silt loam, brown (lOYR 5/3) moist; massive; hard, friable;
about 20 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline.
TYPE LOCATION: Las Animas County, Colorado; 1,850 feet east and 25 feet south of the NW comer
sec. 24, T. 30N., R. 62 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 54 to 59 degrees F.,
and mean summer soil temperatwe ranges from 67 to 76 degrees F. Typically, these soils are calcazeous
at the surface but are leached for 2 to 4 inches in some pedons. They lack continuous subhorizons of
secondary calcium carbonate accumulation above a depth of 40 inches, but some discontinuous
carbonate accumulation occurs at any depth in some pedons. Calcium carbonate equivalent ranges from
15 to 40 percent and is usually more than 20 percent in most horizons within the control section. The
electrical conductivity ranges up to 10 mmhos in some pedons. The particle size control section usually
averages silt loam, loam, or silty clay loam but clay ranges from 18 to 35 percent, silt from 40 to 70
percent, and sand from 5 to 35 percent with less than 15 percent fine or coarser sand. Rock fragments
range from 0 to 10 percent, but are typically less than 2 percent, consisting mostly of limestone
fragments less than 6 inches along the longer axis. Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 47 to 58
degrees F., and mean summer soils temperature ranges from 58 to 80 degrees F. The soil moisture
control section is moist in some part in April through parts of June.
The A horizon has hue of SY through 7.SYR, value of 5 through 7, 3 through 6 moist, and chroma of 2
through 4. It usually has granular structwe but has subangulaz blocky structure in some pedons. This
horizon is soft or slightly hard. It ranges from pH 8.0 to pH 8.6.
http://www.statlab.iastate.edulsoils/osd/daUT~1/MANVEL.html 6/25!02
