A 0-12" -- Very dark grayish brown (lOYR 3/2, moist) clay loam; moderate medium blocks; firm, slightly sticky, plastic; common fine and medium roots, few coarse; medium acid, pH 5.7; gradual smooth boundary. Bw 12-29" -- Olive brown (2.5Y 4/3, moist) silty clay loam; weak fine blocky structure; firm, sticky, plastic; common fine and medium roots; neutral, pH 7.1; gradual wavy boundary. Cgl 29-43" -- Dark grayish brown (lOYR 4/2, moist) loam; few fine distinct dark yellowish brown (lOYR 4/4) mottles; massive; friable, slightly sticky, plastic; few fine and medium roots; slightly effervescent; mildly alkaline, pH 7.4; gradual smooth boundary. Sampling Location (Typical Pedon): Twentymile Coal Company's Foidel Creek permit area, Sample site #8. NW 1/4, SW 1/4, SE 1/4, Section 17, TSN, R86W, Routt County, Colorado. Range in Characteristics: Thickness of the A horizon ranges from 7 to 16 inches. Textures in the 10 to 40 inch control section range from clay loam to silty clay loam to loam. Sand coarser than very fine sand averages less than 15%. Drainage and Permeability: Somewhat poorly drained; moderately slow permeability.
