Taxonomic Class: Fine-loamy, mixed Aquic Cryoborolls.
A 0-12" -- Very dark grayish brown (lOYR 3/2, moist) silt loam; moderate
coarse granules; friable, nonsticky, plastic; common coarse, medium and fine
roots; neutral, pH 7.0; clear smooth boundary.
Bw 12-15" -- Dark grayish brown (lOYR 4/2, moist) loam; weak coarse sub-
angular blocky structure; friable, nonsticky, plastic; common coarse and
medium roots, few fine; mildly alkaline, pH 7.4; clear smooth boundary.
C 25-36" -- Dark grayish brown (lOYR 4/2, moist) and dark brown (lOYR 4/3,
moist) varigated loam; few medium faint dark yellowish brown (lOYR 4/4)
mottles; massive; friable, slightly sticky, plastic; few coarse, medium, and
fine roots; slightly effervescent; mildly alkaline, pH 7.7; clear smooth
boundary.
Ckg 36-42" -- Dark gray (lOYR 4/1, moist) sandy loam; common coarse distinct
olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) mottles; massive; friable, slightly sticky, plastic;
few coarse roots; strongly effervescent; mildly alkaline, pH 7.7; abrupt
smooth boundary.
Cg 42-60" -- Dark gray (lOYR 4/1, moist) fine sandy loam stratified with clay
• loam; few coarse distinct dark yellowish brown (lOYR 4/6) mottles; massive;
very friable, slightly sticky, plastic; few coarse roots; mildly alkaline,
pH 7.6.
Sampling Location (Typical Pedon): Twentymile Coal Company's Foidel Creek
permit area, Sample site #1. NW 1/4, SE 1/4, NE 1/4, Section 24, TSN, R87W,
Routt County, Colorado.
Range in Characteristics: Thickness of the A horizon ranges from 7 to
16 inches. Textures in the 10 to 40 inch control section range from silt loam
to loam to sandy loam. Some pedons are stratified below 40 inches.
Drainage and Permeability: Somewhat poorly drained; moderate permeability.
Depth to water Table: 46 inches on August 1, 1984.
