RECLAMATION PLAN
Plan 6
• The Coaldale Reclamation Plan was formulated with respect to the following
observations in regard to the particular aspects of the Coaldale area.
As Follows:
1. Average annual rainfall of 12-14 inches, occuring in a bimodal
distribution. Spring and Fall are usually windy and after. dry
and windy. Irrigation is li:~ited to water truck only, due to
high capital investment, low water table, amd most importantly,
lack of water.
2. Field observations of naturally occuring ecosystem structures,
including observations of natural revegetation zones found ir.
the area.
3. A comparison of soils analysis from undisturbed sites with
soils analysis from disturbed sites.
4. Limited amounts of topsoil. Although additions of plant media
to some sites will help alleviate severely deficient and/or
rocky areas, the basic theme of the plan is to improve site
parameters via organic applications in order to:
• a. Enhance and promote microsite water retention.
b. Afford a long lasting nutrient supply, available during
normal rainfall intervals.
c. Promote native vegetation re-establishment.
d. In general, reconstruct as much as possible the parameters
characteristic of the undisturbed site.
Referring to the Reclamation Plan timetable, active reclamation efforts
will commence in the Magazine Hill and Gillespie Hill areas in May 1977,
via site preparation. Seedling planting and transplanting programs will
commence in the spring of 1978 and continue until 1980-1, at which time
systems maintenance will ebb in these areas, while site preparation and
planting is active in other areas of the mine. In 1981, parts of Senatore
and Copper Hills will be undergoing site preparation and planting. As a
basic rule of thumb, the goal set for the program is three to four acres of
planting, or about 1000 seedlings per field season, depending on the size
of the area and special considerations for site preparation.
•
