SUMIMRY OF COALDALE MINING PLAT! BY AREA
(Refer to 14ining Plan Maps for Locations)
•
Gold Hill
Thirteen acres of affected land are the highest mine land in,Coaldale
and the area of greatest visual impact as seen from US Highway 50. tdir.ing
commenced in this area in the early 1960's with no regard to final appear-
ance. Although benches for seedling transplants are left from current
mining activities, the upper levels of extraction have resulted in a she sr
rock highwall some 120 meters long and over 60 meters high, at ar. engle
of 60 degrees from the horizontal. Upon completion of mining activites
,i
in this area, probably by 1985, the sheer rock face will be stabilized
and the surrounding bench areas will be plante3 to pinon and juniper per
the reclamation plan. This area will be one of most difficulty and high-
est cost, due to the steep slopes and lack of appreciable growth media.
• It is hoped to initiate reclamation practices on the upper reaches of
Gold Hill by 1982, several years before actual minir_g is completed. The
reason for this is to ascertain actual reclamation costs in this area,
stabilize the highwall for safer working conditions, and ammeliorate as
soon as possible the esthetic aspects of the mined site.
•
