ENVIRONMENT
18. General Topographic Setting: The proposed drill pads and access aze located along an
existing access road in the upper reaches of Sylvester Gulch, on two small ridge fingers
southwest of West Flatiron, and along a small tributary gulch flowing north into Sylvester Gulch.
Much of the terrain surrounding the proposed locations is steep wooded slopes with numerous
bedrock outcrops.
Current Land Use: Public land - US Forest Service, Gunnison National Forest
19. Flora: The dominant vegetation in open ridgetop and bench settings is Gamble oak with a
brushy understory of chokecherry, serviceberry, snowberry, sagebrush, grasses, and fortis. North
slopes and protected gulches and draws also support aspen.
20. Soils/Geology: Soils are generally brown, medium fine loamy sands, with higher clay and
silt fractions on the valley floors. Soils aze very shallow on the steep slopes and locally deeper
on terraces and colluvial fans in the drainage valleys. Massive sandstones and some shales of the
Upper Cretaceous Mesaverde Formation are exposed on the slopes, and many large boulders are
exposed.
21. Ground Visibility: Although brush is locally thick, surface visibility is generally good to
excellent (50%-90%) and patchy. Visibility is poorest in the aspen stands in the floors of the
gulches, and best along existing trails and in grassy meadows.
22. Comments:
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23.
