the folding of the northwest plunging anticline located
,• southwest of the mine. The F seam is downdropped about
18 feet," (more recent investigation indicates that the
displacement is on the order of 33 feet), "on the
southwest side of the fault. Normally occurring drag
features were seen in a soft clay fault gouge within
the nearly vertical fault zone. A large volume of
water was issuing from open fractures associated with
this zone. Mine engineers had previously installed a
device to monitor water volume at this location and
have measured a decreasing flow over the past few
months. Strike direction of the major fracture sets
are parallel to the fault and the anticlinal fold axis.
(• "One day of the trip was used to study fractures along
surface outcrops of the Williams Fork formation of the
Eagle No. 5 coal mine property. A total of 225 dip and
dip azimuth measurements were recorded using a Cocla
'Stratum' compass. Extent and spacing measurements
were also noted. Fracture orientation were plotted in
the office on an upper hemisphere Schmidt Stereo Net.
Results of this work supported observations made underground
with the exception that the north-south features seen
underground were
north 30° west s
sample whereas a
Dips were nearly
\_
north. Fracture
rarely observed on the surface. A
't constituted about 60~ of the total
north 60o east set made up about 40~.
vertical varying from 80° south to 80°
spacing of both sets increased as
