Geolocic Settin
i•
The coal measures of interest to Empire Energy lie within
the Upper Cretaceous Williams Fork Formation and within the
area of concern, lie within the lower third of that formation.
Two significant sandstones outcrop in the area of interest,
the so-called middle sandstone (Kwfms) and the twenty-mile
sandstone (Kwftm). Figure 1 illustrates the relationship of
the units pictorially and Drawing 1 is a cross sectional
representation of the units. The 2 West Mains are projected
to cross the axis of the Williams Fork Anticline, but the
current workings lie wholly on the eastern limb of the
anticline. The average strike of the beds on this limb is
N75°W dipping about 7o to the N-NE.
The units surrounding the F coal seam are shales, sandy
shales, clay cemented sandstones, and coal. Recently the
mine has encountered some faults exhibiting small displacement.
Not only have these faults caused some concern from an
operations standpoint, but an increase in water inflows have
raised questions pertaining to the hydrologic balance.
Table 1 is a chronology of events that have occurred since
encountering the fault.
•
