Geographic Setting
,•
The Eagle No. 5 Mine is an underground coal mine that operates
through portals located on an isthmus of land between the
Yampa River and the Williams Fork (of the Yampa). The
portals are driven in the F seam from its outcrop and diverge
underground creating eastern and western operating areas.
The area of concern lies in the western operating areas.
Entries are driven to the north to a point at which they
turn west and cross underneath the Yampa River, approximately
125 feet below the river. This set of westerly heading
entries is called the 2 West Mains.
The topography above the 2 West Mains is rugged. Immediately
to the west of the Yampa River, the topography ri ses 200
feet in 300 feet horizontally, and over the length of the
mains, the total rise is 800 feet in 2,600 feet horizontally.
Figure 1 is a photograph taken from the eastern bank of the
Yampa looking westward to the hillside under which the 2 West
Mains lie. The vertical relief is substantial and the
hillside is maintained at a high angle by the presence of
numerous sanstone benches.
Exhibit A is a topographic map of the area on which the Mains
• have been superimposed. This Exhibit will be referred to again
~ throughout this report.
