of previously undisturbed topsoil at the top of Area 41 as shown in the 1985
• Reclamation Report. The study plot layout consists of 12 treatments.
Treatments consist of two methods of treating vegetation prior to live
handling topsoil (Madge roto-clear, dozing), two seasons of treatment
(summer trees growing, fall trees dormant), two methods of handling live
topsoil (one lift and two lifts), and two fencing treatments (fenced and
unfenced). The approximate area of treatment is six acres resulting in
about } acre per treatment.
The re vegetation monitoring plan will consist of annual tree and shrub
density estimates by species using fourteen, 2 X 25 meter or 2 X 23 meter
belt transects within each treatment.
•
The elk proof fence specifications are as follows:
Height of fence: 8 feet
Treated wooden posts 5" diameter top, 12 feet long
Steel fence posts 10 feet long
V mesh wire
In addition to the above treatments CYCC proposes to test the grass
herbicide "Poast" and/or "Fusilade". This should help reduce grass
competition without affecting trees and shrubs. "Poast" and/or Fusilade
would be applied at a rate of approximately one quart per acre.
Approximately 4500 ft.z strip of each of the twelve, # acre plots would be
treated.
CYCC proposes to leave approximately six acres in the topsoil removal area
at the top of Area 41 untopsoiled. This area was never mined but topsoil
was removed for the aspen regeneration study. Aspen suckering in the area
has been excellent and topsoiling would destroy these aspen. Due to the
emphasis on woody species establishment this would 6e counter productive.
In addition CYCC proposes to leave the two tree and brush piles created
during construction of the aspen regeneration study as cover for small game.
The fourth revision involves Area 9/10. Colorado Yampa Coal Company
• submitted a technical revision (87-10) to redistribute G-10 inches of
topsoil in the western and middle portions of the regraded 105 acres in
Permit Renewal 780-107-2 Revised 12/12/88
