~J
•
bridge the river, cross Sylvester Gulch at Mile 20.2 with a culvert, and
follow the bank very closely for 1.6 miles before crossing to the north
side where it will join the existing alignment at the eastern end of Section
III. The differences of this modified alignment compared with the original
Alternative III-C are: the inclusion of the Do Nothing Alternative in
Somerset which was the overwhelming choice of its citizens; the need for
three bridges rather than six; and the lower cost. There will be a slower
speed, increased noise and safety hazard in Somerset and the Bear Mine
operations will have to be modified in such a way to accommodate the place-
ment of State Highway 133 through the mining operation. This modification
will be closely coordinated with the operator of Bear Mine.
Construction Timing and Cost of the Recommended Route
All of the improvements for the recommended route discussed in this
Statement cannot possibly be made in the immediate future. Therefore,
priorities have been established with the four mile section east of Somerset
having first priority because of the conflict between the railroad right-of-way
and the highway. The Hotchkiss bypass has last priority and may not be built
for many years. Nevertheless, it would be prudent for Delta County, with low
priority sections of the recommended route, to reserve the right-of-way as a
transportation corridor and not allow any further developments within the
limits of the proposed right-of-way.
CJ
