• CHAPTER II: PROPOSED HIGHWAY PROJECT AND ITS SURROUNDINGS
Descrip tion of Proposed Highwa y Improvement
The proposed highway project provides for new construction and/or
improvement of sections of State Highway 133 in the valley of the North Fork
of the Gunnison between hotchkiss in Delta County and Paonia Dam in Gunnison
County. State Highway 133 is part of the principal east and west route
joining the Delta-Hotchkiss area of the !Jestern Slope to Carbondale in the
Roaring Fork Valley by way of the Crystal River. The project will be constructed
to Rural Secondary Standards with two 12 foot lanes and two 8 foot shoulders
as shown in FigurE~ II-1, "Typical Cross Section". Due to develop-
ment and narrowness of the valley, this will be the maximum right-of-way
available in some locations. The existing width of right-of-way from Hotchkiss
to Terror Creek is 100 feet. This Department will purchase a 200 foot wide
right-of-way in the Hotchkiss area for the eventual construction of a 4-lane
bypass, when warranted. Also, a 100 foot right-of-way will be purchased
between Terror Creek and Paonia Reservoir. No new right-of-way will be
acquired in Somerset from 14iles 18.0 to 18.6. In Section II, there is a
• possibility of interference from steep crass slopes. If these areas are
