Section 785.19 (c) Continued.
•
the alluvium is sticky, dark brown clay which exhibits no layering.
Very minor silt content was present in the clay. Gravel pockets
are rare in the intermittent draws, as shown on Map 40, Kerr Mine
Area Stream Channel Cross Sections, and are sometimes found at the
very bottom portion of the alluvial fill. Talus slopes, regolith
and colluvial deposits are common in steep areas, such as on the
flanks of the hillside where the old County Road 12E makes a sharp
turn in the existing Marr Mine Area. Gravel material covers the
ground over most of the Kerr North Area; however, this was found to
be outwash from the glacial terrace deposits mapped by Kinney
(Kinney, 1970). Much of the flood plain of the Canadian River in
the general area is mapped as unconsolidated streamlaid material,
although the exact lithology is not known at specific locations.
Most of the Illinois River floodplain was also mapped as unconsoli-
dated streamlaid material.
•
Areas"Meeting Geomdiphic Criteria
Six subject areas within the general area are acknowledged as
meeting the geomorphic criteria of alluvial valley floors. As
shown in the shaded portions of Map 5, North Park Hydrology and Map
16, Kerr Mine Area Surface Water Hydrology, these areas are 1) the
floodplain of the Illinois River; 2) the floodplain of the Canadian
River; 3) the lower reach of Bolton Draw downstream from the mine
plan area; 4) the lower reach of Bush Draw and isolated areas in
the mine plan area; 5) the lower reach of Williams Draw and iso-
lated areas in the mine plan area; and 6) the reach of Sudduth Draw
in and downstream from the mine plan area.
The first subject area, the floodplain of the Illinois River, is
adjacent to a large lumber mill, a wildlife refuge, the Union
Pacific railroad line and the town of Walden, as well as the Kerr
Tipple Area. These features all drain onto the floodplain of the
Illinois River. Thus, the quantity and quality of water adjacent
785-10
