6. Schednle of Operations
Mining operations will occur from January through May of each of the two winters. The operator
will not have night gravel mining operations, although minor truck activity may occur after hours.
5. Mesa County Impacts and Other Environmental Impacts
As stated earlier, the tonnage mined and removed in the first winter of operation is 110,000 tons.
During the second winter, approximately 140,000 tons will be mined and removed. A11 trucks leav-
ing the site will be covered and will utilize all existing roads. The truck capacity will be 24 tons,
therefore, the loaded trucks leaving the site in the first winter is 4583, while the second winter will
have approximately 58331oads. No new roads will be needed for this operation. Trucks will enter
19 Road directly from the north or south entrances to the pit and will proceed north on 19 Road to
east on the south frontage road of I-70 to south on River Road to United's facility a few miles south
of I-70 on the River Road. Overall, this location is needed to supply the growing needs of develop-
ment in Mesa County since there are very few economically minable reserves left in the Grand
Junction area. The alternative to this pit is to truck gravel from greater distances at increased cost
and increased truck traffic on the road system or mine reserves which have much higher land costs
or overburden removal costs closer to Grand Junction. These sites are also generally closer to a
greater number of people, thereby increasing impacts.
Once the site is reclaimed, a permanent lake will be left that is approximately 10-14 feet deep over
7.5 acres, with wetlands on the edges, that can be used for wildlife habitat in a very dry part of the
County, where a lake of this type has good value. It can be stated that the post-mining use value
exceeds the current use of the site.
There should be no significant demands on Mesa County services from this operation since produc-
tion and reclamation will only involve personnel of 4-5 people on site at any given time.
19 Road Pit 10(02 17
