Application of oil shall be <br />done by spraying. <br />7.0 UTILITY EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL <br />Excavated material shall be piled neatly along the side of the trench excavations m such <br />a manner as to be of as little inconvenience as possible. <br />Trenches may be excavated either by hand, or by machine, and excavation shall begin <br />at the outlet end and proceed upgrade. The lower portion of the trench, up to an <br />elevation of approximately 12 in. above the top of the pipe, shall be cut with the sides <br />substantially vertical. The upper portion of the trench may be widened or flared to <br />obviate the need for shoring and bracing, if approved by the Engineer. Conduit and pipe <br />trench bottoms shall be evenly pitched as required. <br />Where utilities are to be installed in new embankment fills, the embankment shall first be <br />constructed and compacted to an elevation approximately 12 in. above the top of utility, <br />or as directed by the Engineer, after which the trench may be excavated. <br />The Engineer shall have the right to limit the amount of trench which is opened or <br />partially opened at any one time and also to limit the amount of trench left without <br />backfitl, at any one time. <br />Excavations for utility structures shalt be made to the depths as indicated on the <br />drawings, and with sufficient side clearances to provide adequate working space for the <br />construction of the respective structures. <br />When unsatisfactory soil conditions, such as soft mud, quicksand, or other unstable <br />material. are encountered at the bottom of excavations, the bed shall be made firm and <br />solid by removing the unstable material to a sufficient depth, and replacing it with <br />crushed rack gravel, or other approved material, well compacted into place in an <br />approved manner, and to the satisfaction of the Engineer. <br />Subcontractor shall furnish, place, and maintain such braang and shoring as may be <br />required to support the sides of the excavations for the proper protection of the workmen <br />and to facilitate the work, and to prevent damage to adjacent structures or facilities. <br />Upon completion of the work, all braang and shoring shall be removed. <br />Foot bridges of approved construction, not less than 4 ft wide, and provided with <br />handrails and uprights of dressed lumber, shall be installed by Subcontractor over <br />trenches at alt cross walk intersections, and at such other paints where, in the opinion of <br />the Engineer. traffic conditions make it necessary. Substantially constructed bridges. <br />adequate for handling all vehicular traffic, shall be installed by Subcontractor over any <br />trench or other excavation intersecting a road. whenever such excavation is in excess of <br />half the width of the road crossing. <br />Alt bridges required to be installed, shall be maintained in place by Subcontractor m good <br />working order as long as the condition of the work requires then use. <br />uoearw~srec~srnuei+cco+arc ooe. a.. w 6 w.... omm. n. ~sr <br />
