Kvaerner Metes <br />• Project No. 306900 <br />General Specification No. GC-01 <br />Site Work <br />The sides of all foundation excavations or trenches shall be adequately <br />supported by bracing or shoring and sheeting as necessary to ensure against <br />slides, slips or cave-ins and to meet all safety code requirements. <br />Structures and pipelines shall be adequately supported in all situations where <br />adjacent excavation undercuts or reduces the support of such structures and <br />pipelines. <br />Open excavations adjacent to lines of normal vehicular or foot traffic shall be <br />suitably protected by berm or bamcades and warning lights. <br />Springs or seepage water encountered shall be reported to the Engineer. If the <br />drawings do not indicate drainage facilities, provisions for the permanent care of <br />such water shall be made as directed by the Engineer. <br />Excess excavated material. or materials not suited for use in backfill shall be <br />disposed of in spoil areas approved by the Engineer. <br />6.2 Structural Backfill <br />All excavations to be backfilled shall be dry, clean and free of all shoring <br />materials. fanning materials, trash and debris prior to the starting of backfll. No <br />such materials shall be allowed to be included with the backfill materials. Areas to <br />be backfilled shall be inspected and approved by the Engineer prior to the <br />placement of material. <br />Backfill shall not be placed against walls for 7 days after pouring and until the <br />concrete has attained 90% of its speafied 28 day strength, in order to withstand <br />the pressure of backfill as placed and compacted. Backfill shall be brought up <br />and compacted in essentially uniform heights around all sides of columns or <br />footings, or on both sides of subgrade walls. Motorized hauling or compaction <br />equipment, except hand compactors, shall not approach concrete structures <br />closer than 3 ft. <br />Backfill material for open excavation adjacent to foundations, footings, cut-off <br />walls, retaining walls, etc., shall comply with the requirements of Section 5.3. and <br />shall be placed and compacted as specified. <br />Sand backfill shall be free from debris or organic contamination and possessing <br />particle size grading within the following limits: <br />Passing the No. 4 sieve: 100% <br />Passing the No. 200 sieve: 15% max. <br />Sand backfill shall be placed in uniform lifts not exceeding 12 in. in loose <br />thickness and shall be compacted to 95 percent maximum density. <br />Oiled sand under tanks shall be free From corrosive elements and shall be at <br />least 4 in. in thickness.
