Kvaerner Metes
• Project No. 306900
General Specification No. GC-01
Site Work
compacted to 90 percent maximum density, at or slightly above the optimum
moisture content, as determined by ASTM D 1557.
Compaction shall be done with heavy rubber-tired rollers, sheepsfoot rollers or as
approved by the Engineer. Places inaccessible to rollers shall be compacted with
mechanical or hand tampers.
Each layer shall be free of ruts and shall meet compaction requirements before
each succeeding layer is placed. Layers shall be maintained with a crown ar
slope to provide drainage and prevent erosion.
A minimum of one field density test shall be performed, in accordance with ASTM
D 2922 for each layer or 300 cubic yards of compacted material, whichever is
smaller. Additional tests may be required. when approved by the Engineer. All
tests shall be performed by an independent testing agency.
5.3 Structural Fills
Where buildings or facilities are to be constructed, fill matenal shall consist of
free-draining, well graded granular and non-expansive sods having a maximum
particle size of 4 inches and a maximum percentage of fines (minus #200 sieve)
of 20 percent by weight. The fill material shall have a liquid limit of less than 25
and a plasticity index of less than 10.
Filf material shall be placed in uniform lifts not exceeding 8 inches in loose
thickness and shall be compacted to 98 percent maximum density, at a moisture
content within 2% of optimum moisture content, as determined by ASTM
D 1557.
Field density tests shall be performed as indicated in Section 5.2.
The limit for structural fills shall not be less than 10 ft. beyond the footprints of
faulities.
6.0
STRUCTURAL EARTHWORK
Foundations and footings shall be established upon swtable undisturbed sod or upon
compacted structural fill as shown on the drawings or as directed by the Engineer.
Placement and compaction of structural fill shall be as speufied m Section 5.3.
6.1 Structural Excavation
All excavation shall be made to the depth called for on the drawings. Bottom of-
excavation shall be clean and clear of loose matenal.
If excavations to the depth indicated on the drawings terminate in material which
is not swtable for foundation support, the Engineer shall be informed and shall
direct the corrective action requred.
~ ~wewwwveasrnucncu+svc ooc. a« Mi 6 +~w o'r. sr. +aw
