T0: Colorado Westmoreland, Inc.
DATE: July 16, 1981
PAGE: - 3 -
be to obtain more specific data on the analyses of the crushing
and screening level fill performed by both these companies:
We propose to further evaluate the detailed aerial photographs
of the area (these photographs are being used by Dames ~ Moore
for other purposes) and to perform a limited field mapping
program to identify two landslides that were described by the
Colorado Geological Survey.
We propose to drill a total of 6 exploratory borings at .the
site. One boring would be drilled in the crushing and screening
level fill, two borings would be drilled at the location of the
diversion channel cut, and three borings would be drilled at
the location of the proposed waste disposal area (at least two
of these borings would serve,at the same time,as the exploratory
borings for the toe of the crushing and screening level fill).
Appropriate samples would be obtained from individual borings for
the purpose of soil testing.
We propose to excavate 6 to 8 test pits. The purpose of [he test
• pits is to obtain detailed information on the geologic con-
ditions of the diversion channel cut (two to three test pits are
planned at this location) to verify the composition of individual
fills at the site (two to three test pits are planned for this
purpose) and to investigate the foundation conditions for the
proposed waste disposal area (two test pits are proposed for this
purpose).
We suggest to install 2 to 3 monitoring wells above and below the
proposed waste disposal area. Prior the installation of the moni-
toring wells, simple permeability tests would be performed in order
to obtain data on the permeability of the foundation soils.
lJe propose to perform appropriate soil testing to obtain data on
the index properties of individual soil types and of the fill
material, data on the compressibility and the shearing resistance
of these soils, and data on the permeability of the foundation
soils of the proposed waste pile. Soil testing would include
testing of physical properties of the waste pile material.
We propose to perform chemical testing to determine the nature of
the projected coal processing waste as required by the CMLRB. Test-
ing would be performed on two samples each of the roof material,
interburden material and the floor material. Testing would include
• the textural analysis and the chemical properties as required.
` We propose to perform a series of analyses that would deal with
