U
T0: Colorado l•lestmoreland, Inc.
DATE: July 16, 1981
PAGE: - 2 -
In this proposal, the purpose and method of the Phase 2 geo-
technical studies are presented for your consideration.
PURPOSE OF PHASE 2 STUDIES
•
The Phase 2 geotechnial studies can be divided into three groups:
geotechnical studies related to the existing mine surface facili-
ties, geotechnical studies related to the reclaimed configurations
of the mine, and studies related to the proposed waste disposal
area.
Studies related to the existing facilities would include a review
of the old landslides that were identified and delineated by the
Colorado Geological Survey north of the existing mine, the evalu-
ation of the stability conditions of the existing diversion chan-
nel cut, the evaluation of the stability of the crushing and screen-
ing level fill; it is possible that some additional fills, such as
the fan level fill, will be included in the evaluation,if necessary.
The studies would include the evaluation of a small landslide that
has developed close to the sedimentation pond No. 4.
Studies necessary for the design recommendations for the reclaimed
configurations would include the diversion channel cut, the crush-
ing and screening level fill and other, more important fills at
the site, and the other soils and rock cuts that have been construc-
ted or excavated at the site. Design recommendations for these
surface facilities would be 'provided for the designer.
Studies related to the waste disposal area would be performed so
that appropriate design recommendations can be evaluated; as a
part of this study, several ground water monitoring wells would be
installed in the vicinity of the disposal area location.
METHOD OF PHASE 2 STUDIES

We propose to perform the Phase 2 studies according to the follow-
ing schedule:
A more detailed review of previous studies performed by CWI con-
sultants would be performed. l,'e would meet with the representatives
of Kenneth P7edearis Associates and, if possible, with those of
the Willis and Paul Corporation. The purpose of these meetings would
