3-11
hay will be spread and crimped into the surface. Following
• seeding and harrowing, another 2,000 lbs/acre of straw or native
hay will be spread.
On slopes steeper than 3:1, straw or native hay mulch will be
applied at the rate of 3,000 lbs/acre following seeding and
harrowing. This mulch will be anchored with degradable netting
such as Con-wed.
3.3.5 Planting Times
Seed will be planted during late summer or early fall to take
advantage of the period of highest precipitation, which begins in
August. Shrub and tree stock will be planted in early spring of
• the year following seeding with stock in dormant condition.
3.3.6 Irrigation and Fertilization
Woody stock will be watered in at the time of planting. This will
give the stock a significant headstart. In addition, a 5-gram
fertilizer tablet will be placed in the root zone at planting.
Aside from this fertilizer, no additional fertilizer (except for
phosphorous if analysis indicates that this relatively immobile
element is deficient) will be added until the year after seeding
and planting when soil tests and field evaluation of vegetational
vigor will be used to determine if fertilizer is required, and how
• much. Unneeded fertilization will be avoided, since native plants
have low potential response to fertilizer and undesirable weed
1/17/86
