Mountain Coal Company <br />West Elk Mine <br />RPE Shafts Project Plan <br />Drainage from the RPE Shaft project will be collected in the existing sedimentation pond, <br />designated RPE pond. Discharges from this pond are conducted in accordance with <br />NPDES requirements and permit conditions. Additional infomration regarding pond <br />capacity and diversion structures can be found in MR-303. <br />VEGETATION <br />Disturbance of existing vegetation is not anticipated The vegetation consists of <br />communities of a few aspen trees with a light understory of chokecherry, serviceberry <br />and Gambel's oak; mostly Mountain brome and other grasses; and various other shrubs <br />and forts. <br />Complete field investigations were previously completed for the development of the RPE <br />area. This information is presented in TR-40, TR-79 and Eacbibit 70, Volume lOB. <br />Background environmental information Perta''~ing to the vegetation of the area can be <br />found in this document and its appendices. <br />SOILS <br />Complete field investigations were previously completed for the development of the RPE <br />area. This information is presented in TR-90, TR-79 and Exhibit 70, Volume lOB. <br />Background environmental information pertaining to the soils of the area can be found in <br />this document and its appendices. <br />WILDLIFE <br />Complete field investigations were previously completed for the development of the RPE <br />area. This information is presented in TR-90, TR-79 and Exhibit 70, Volume IOB. <br />Background environmental information pe wining to the water resor>cces of the area can <br />be found in this document and its appendices. <br />The proposed RPE Shaft project will be managed to avoid conflicts with wildlife. <br />Operations will not interfere with raptor nesting sites, including Golden and Bald Eagle, <br />and Peregrine Falcon. <br />THREATENED OR ENDANGERED AND SENSITIVE SPECIES <br />Complete field investigations were previously completed for the development of the RPE <br />area.
