Preliminary Adequacy Review
Bear Coal Co., inc. - Bear. hfine
Page Two
.4 Cultural and Historical
No further action concerning cultural resources is required of the Bear Mine unless
' further surface disturbances are to take place .and/or cultural resources discovered.
2.04.5 General Description of Hydrology and Geology
1. The applicant must supply complete geology and hydrology maps of the general
area. The geology map should delineate faults, folds, landslides, intrusive evidences
and major jointing. The hydrology map should include the location of regional
' alluvial and bedrock aquifers, as well as the direction of ground water flow in the
general area. The location of the seventy-seven (77) springs mentioned in the text
must also be located on the hydrology map. (2.09.5(1)(b)) ..PAGES 31 - 33
' REVISED TO 2I SPRIPIGS IN THE PERMIT AND ADJACENT AREA MAPS ARE IPJCLUDED~,
2.04.6 Geology Description
' 2.09.6 (2) Underground Mining
l~. The 1ogs.of the drilIholes located on map 2.04..6(2)(a)-3 should be provided
with the depth where first water was encountered indicated on each log. This infor-
1 ma ti on is needed to facilitate the determination.of probable hydrologic consequences
of mining. (2.04.6 (2) (a) (iv) (A1) PAGES 4J &y0A
LOGS ARE ENCLOSED
The analysis of the C seam coal should differentiate by percentage the sulfur
ounds encountered. Those of concern are pyritic sulfur, organic sulfur and
sulfate sulfur. The different sulfur compounds vary in toxic and acid forming
~•apabilities.
PAGE 41
3. On page 92 the applicant states that water is pumped from the mine to maintain
the competency of the floor shales for safety reasons. The applicant must prpvide
~ data on the rate of production of mine water by mine inflow data or aquifer tests
_ and the methods of disposal of this water.
PAGES 42, 4?A. 43
' 2.09.7 Hydrology Description
2.04.7 (1) Groundwater Information
1. If insufficient data is available to determine water table extent and storage
capacity from ARCO's observation wells, as stated on page 33 of the permit,. Bear
c'oa1 must supply a water monitoring plan to determine this baseline information.
' Recharge, storage and discharge characteristics must also be determined (see Section.
1.02.6(3)). (2.04.7(4) ~ b)) PAGES 46. 46A. 46B
' 2. The low permeability of the sandstone aquifers must be documented (page 45).
(2.09.7(b)) PAGES 46A & 46a~
\ 3. The applicant must address the probability of vertical migration of groundwater
through fracture and fault zones. (2.04.7(a 6 b)). This can be accomplished through
ping of underground seeps and springs on a mine workings map.
DRAWIF~G 2.044,7(2)(A)-2
F
