used principally for agricultural and some residences. During
construction and operation of the Grand Valley facilities, about
80 acres of land will be removed from agricultural and residential
use and converted to industrial purposes. The area is now predomi-
nantly used for livestock grazing and is similar to hundreds of
acres in western Colorado. Removal of the land from agricultural
and residential use will not represent a signficant change in
overall agricultural land use of the area.
POST-MINING LAND USE
The pre-mining land use of the Dow West property is predominantly
livestock grazing and big game habitat. It is Colony's desire
to reclaim disturbed areas to a self-sustaining landscape which
provides habitat and forage for domestic livestock and wildlife.
Shrubland meadow plant cover was selected for the post-mining
disturbed areas on the Dow West property because of the pre-mining
conditions. This plant cover will provide grazing for livestock
as well as develop cover, food and nesting areas for wildlife.
The surrounding heavily shrubbed areas and random patches of
planted shrubs on the reclaimed surface will provide adequate
edge effect to insure a diverse wildlife habitat.
The slopes of the disposal embankments will be approximately 3:1
maximum. The disposal pile is designed to prevent pollution of
water resources from subsurface flow and runoff (See Exhibit D).
Intensive agricultural activities, involving plowing or other
types of surface disturbances on the reclaimed disposal areas,
could result in loss of the protective covering which would expose
the waste to weathering and result in leachate formation. For
this reason, the disposal area will not be reclaimed for intensive
agricultural use.

E-8
