• The proposed seed mixture, as shown in Table 1, Proposed Seed Mixture,
contains the diversity essential for ecological site stability. On the
areas to be disturbed by the surface facilities, reclamation will take
place following the conclusion of mining activities. The revegetation
will be conducted during the first normal planting season following the
application of the topsoil and the preparation of the site for seeding.
The most favorable time of revegetation will be in late September or
early October; therefore, the seeding will be done just prior to the
season when the probability of moisture is at its greatest.
Planting and Seeding Methods. Once topsoil has been reapplied and
leveled, a farm tractor or motor grader mounted scarifier will be used
to chisel plow the topsoil. Chisel plowing or scarifying alleviates any
compaction. Following the chisel plowing, a straw mulch will be surface
blown onto all topsoil areas. Next the area will be disked to anchor
the mulch into the soil and prepare a mellow, yet firm seed bed.
Following the mulching and disking, the area will be seeded with the
• perennial mixture as shown in Table 1, Proposed Seed hlixtures. On
steeper slopes, seed will be broadcast using a cyclone seeder at twice
the drill seed rate. On level areas, all seed will be drill seeded with
the heavy duty rangeland drill pulled by a rubber tire farm tractor or
small crawler dozer. Seed coverage on areas broadcast seeded will be
accomplished by chisel plowing and disking where possible and by the
freeze-thaw action of these roughened soils as they receive moisture
from fall and winter storms.
During the early spring following late summer planting, the
containerized or bare root tree plantings will be hand-planted into the
new seeding. Hand shovels and/or augers will be used to transplant
these species. Planting during this period will result in minimal
damage to the seeded vegetation and lessens the potential mortality that
can be expected when seedlings are transplanted into stands having a
more developed root system.

-27-
