Page 2
To evaluate the overall erosion condition of various reclaimed
areas, the Bureau of Land Management's Erosion Condition
Classification System described in Technical Note No. 346 was
utilized. This method considers both sheet, and rill and gully
erosion, and documents the overall erosion condition of a given
site. This method is described in detail in Permit No. C-80-001,
Appendix 4.3-B.
MONITORING INFORMATION
Moffat Area
Nine separate blocks were classified in the current reclaimed area
at the southern end of the Moffat Area. These blocks closely
coincide with the blocks outlined yearly in the mine's Annual
Reclamation Report. These areas are shown on Exhibit 1, Sheet 1 of
2, of this report. Block 1 is live handled topsoil that will not
receive additional seeding as a test block for live handling roto-
cleared topsoil for reintroduction of native plant species. Block
2 is also at the southern end of the Moffat reserve. This area is
live handled topsoil that was seeded in the spring of 1993. Block
3 is a 1993 live handled topsoil area that was seeded in the spring
of 1994. Block 4 was topsoiled in 1993 and will not have
additional seed applied as a continuation of the study area started
with Block 1. Block 5 is live handled topsoil area that was seeded
with the approved reclamation seed mix in the spring of 1994.
Block 6 is live handled topsoil that was placed during calendar
year 1993 and seeded in the spring of 1994. Block 7 is part of the
no seed area that will continue the test practice in Blocks 1 and
4. This topsoil was placed in 1994. Block a was also topsoiled in
1994 and will be seeded in 1995 as soon as ground conditions are
dry enough to allow equipment to be utilized. Block 9 was also
topsoiled in 1994, and awaits seeding in 1995.
Block 1
Moffat Area, Block 1 was evaluated using the methods described in
BLM Technical Note No. 346. The erosion condition composite soil
surface factor score of this site is 22.0, which places it in the
Slight Erosion Condition Class. Please note that last year Block
1 was separated into two areas the southern most scoring in the
Stable reach and the northern half in the high end of the Slight
classification with a score of 40. This overall class of 22
represents an improvement of the northern part of this block.
The tabulated results for this survey are shown in Table 1. No
mitigation procedures are contemplated for this area. A gully
feature toward the western edge of this block, which was noted in
last years field notes, has stabilized.
6/22/95 DLB
