pipeline corridor by Grand River Institute (Barrett 1994). The azchaeological site
was evaluated as needing data in order to make a recommendation as to its
eligibility on the National Register of Historic Places, and the isolated finds are
not eligible. These sites will be delineated in the field and avoided during
construction of the Yankee Gulch Project pipelines, as required.
.Archaeological monitoring, in which a qualified azchaeologist would observe
excavation of the trench for cultural resources that might be encountered, would
be performed during pipeline construction only as required by the BLM.
3.2.2 Paleontological Resources
If required by the BLM, paleontological monitoring would be conducted during
construction of the pipeline. For this effort, a qualified paleontologist would
observe excavation of the pipeline trench for any paleontological resources that
might be encountered. Efforts would be made to avoid providing the exact
location of scientifically significant resources if such attention would conflict
with management objectives for those resources.
3.2.3 Threatened, Endangered, and Protected Species
The following information applies to threatened, endangered, and protected
plant and animal species along the Yankee Gulch Project pipeline corridor.
• Plant Surveys: The primary plant species of concern on BLM-
administered lands aze the Dudley Bluffs bladderpod and the Dudley
Bluffs twinpod, both of which are federally listed as threatened. Both of
these species are found only on the Thirteenmile Creek Tongue of the
Green River Formation (Thirteenmile Tongue).
American Soda contracted authorized botanists to conduct surveys for
sensitive plant species along .portions of the ROW not ~ previously
surveyed for other pipeline studies. The pipeline corridor. from the
Piceance Site to the upper end of Hatch Gulch was surveyed by Western
Slope Environmental Consultants in the spring of 1998 (Young and Young
1998). No threatened or endangered plant species were identified along
this reach, including an outcrop of the Thirteenmile Tongue in Hatch
Gulch. An additional survey of the reach from the upper end of Hatch
Gulch to the top of the mesa leading to the Greasewood Compressor
Station may be required if it is determined that the construction ROW
would cross the Thirteenmile Tongue.
A botanical survey that included a 200-foot-wide corridor from the
centerline of the existing Barrett Resources gas pipeline was completed in
1994 (Barrett 1994). No occurrences of the Dudley Bluffs bladderpod or the
Dudley Bluffs twinpod were documented along this corridor.
Pipelvie Plan of Development 17
Yankee Gulch Sodium A1'uterak Project
Amnion Soda.
