3.2 Environmental Protection Measures
3.Z1 Cultural Resources
Information on cultural n'sources occurring along the Yankee Gulch Project
pipeline corridor has been taken from the environmental assessments for two
gas pipelines that the project pipeline corridor will largely parallel (Barrett 1994,
CMG 1995). Areas of the Yankee Gulch Project pipeline corridor that are within
the 125-foot construction ROW but were not covered under these two surveys
will be surveyed as required by the BLM. Additional surveys that may be
required are described below.
• No cultural resources surveys aze required along the valley floor in Hatch
Gulch (MP 2 to MP 6). Previous surveys of Hatch Gulch did not encounter
cultural resources, and the potential for discovering sifi~ along the valley
bottom is considered low by the BLM.
• Cultural resources surveys will likely be required from the point that the
pipeline corridor exits Hatch Gulch to the Greasewood Compressor Station
(MP 6 to approximately MP 8).
r~
• A cultural resources survey of the proposed Davis Point pipeline corridor
section may be required because none has been conducted previously
along this particulaz reach. Specifically, the survey would include the
segment from the point on Davis Point at which the proposed pipeline
route diverges from the existing pipeline corridor to the point at which it
rejoins the existing Unocal corridor neaz the conflulence of East and
Middle Fork Pazachute Creek (MP 32 to MP 35).
In that pipeline construction will not commence until the year 2000, American
Soda intends to complete any required additional cultural resources surveys
within the coming field season. This would allow ample time for consultation
and cultural resources clearings to be accomplished prior to commencing
pipeline construction the following yeaz.
The primary form of mitigation for cultural resources will be avoidance. The
primary treatment choice would be to narrow the ROW to produce the least
amount of disturbance. Depending on the value of the resource, minor
excavation and data recovery to full excavation and data recovery could be
necessary. Full excavation and data recovery could extend beyond the limits of
the proposed ROW.
Existing survey data should be adequate to chazacterize the potential for cultural
sites, and the project should be able to avoid any sites that may be identified in
the additional areas surveyed. Chie azchaeological site (:iRB3664) and two
isolated finds (SRB3fi65 and 5RB3666) were previously identified along the
Pipdirc Plan of Development 1f
Yankee Guldi Sodnm~ Ma~erals Project
Ameri4n Soda, LLP.
