1
necessary. Full excavation and data recovery could extend beyond the limits of
the proposed ROW.
Existing survey data should be adequate to characterize the potential for cultural
sites, and the project should be able to avoid any sites that may be identified in
the additional areas surveyed. One archaeological site (5RB3664) and two
isolated finds (5RB3665 and 5RB3666) were previously identified along the
pipeline corridor by Grand River Institute (Barrett 1994). These sites will be
' delineated in the field and avoided during construction of the Yankee Gulch
Project pipelines.
Archaeological monitoring, in which a qualified archaeologist would observe
excavation of the trench for cultural resources that might be encountered, would
be performed during pipeline construction only as required by the BLM.
3.2.2 Paleontological Resources
If required by the BLM, paleontological monitoring would be conducted during
construction of the pipeline. For this effort, a qualified paleontologist would
observe excavation of the pipeline trench for any paleontological resources that
might be encountered. Efforts would be made to avoid providing the exact
location of scientifically significant resources if such attention would conflict
' with management objectives for those resources.
3.2.3 Wildlife Timing Restrictions
Ground-disturbing pipeline construction activities within 1.5 miles of the
known active sage grouse lek on Barnes Ridge would be scheduled to avoid the
' critical activity period from March 1 through July 15. Non-ground-disturbing
activities such as surveying, preparatory work, or light ingress/egress along this
section of the route would be limited to times of day when the leks are not in
' use.
3.2.4 Threatened, Endangered, and Protected Species
The following information applies to threatened, endangered, and protected
' species along the Yankee Gulch Project pipeline corridor.
• Plant Surveys: The primary plant species of concern on BLM-
' administered lands are the Dudley Bluffs bladderpod and the Dudley Bluffs
twinpod, both of which are federally listed as threatened. Both of these species
are found only on the Thirteenmile Tongue of the Green River Formation.
American Soda contracted authorized botanists to conduct surveys for sensitive
plant species along portions of the ROW not previously surveyed for other
' pipeline studies.
