Memo to Terrel Johnson
October 4, 1990
page 2
Oa going consultations were held with the supplier, Goodyear~s
taehniaal representatives, Cyprus Corporate engineering staff and
mine site operations and engineering personnel. A. April 23, 1990,
memo from Goodyear (sea attached) stated that, ~~We continue to be
unable to explain the problems which are being described~~.
in April 1990 the decision was made to try running the belt without
the turnovers. After consulting with the State, the turnovers were
removed. There have been no folding problems with the A-belt since
that time.
The engineering staff continues to work with Goodyear~s engineers
to determine A-belt operating parameters (motor amps, system
friction, etc.) and to understand the actual dynamics of A-belt
operations. We believe we are closer to an understanding of the
problem. Goodyear has recently completed additional calculations
for A-belt (memo from Steve Kasper to Mike Gambrel dated October
4, 1990, copy attached).
At the present time, the theoretical solution would include (1)
replacement of the existing belt with a heavier-weight belt; (2)
replacement of, with modifications, the turn-ovE:r rollers with
respect to position, orientation and spacing; and. (3) controlled
start-up and loading of the belt over a period of time.
Cyprus Empire feels the cost of testing this option is prohibitive.
It would involve the purchase of 6000 ft of new belt at $21/ft,
reinstallation of turn-over rollers (currentl}~ estimated at
$10,000). Start-up and controlled loading would occur over a
period of from one to two weeks. The entire belt replacement would
take from two to three weeks. During this time, mine production
would be curtailed.
We continue to work on the problem. Should conditions dictate, we
would try to put the turn-overs back during a period of reduced
mining activity (i.e., miners vacation or a longwall move).
