MEMO
DATE: October 4, 1990
TO: Terrell Johnson
FROM: Collis Stewart l
SUBJECT: A-belt Fold-over Problem
The following is a summary of the fold-over problem with the
Overland Helt (A-belt) and the actions Cyprus Empire has taken with
respect to attempts to solve the problem.
Ia March 1990, Cyprus Empire began to experience problems with the
overland A-belt folding in half back on itself whi:Le going through
the turn-over rollers. When the belt folded over, the cords in the
belt were broken and anywhere from 100 to 300 feet of belt had to
be cut out and replaced. Anywhere from 2 hours to to hours was
required for repairs. Because all mined coal must travel this
belt, mine production was shutdown during the times when the A-belt
was broken.
It was decided that the age of the belt and possible damage to the
belt over time were the probable causes of the problem. Cyprus
Empire purchased 60-inch, 600 piw belt and split the belt to a 50-
inch width. The 60-inch belt was purchased because it was the only
belt available ~~in stock~~. This belt weighed approximately l0 lb
per foot versus the 15 lb per foot that the old belt weighed.
After the new belt was installed, problems continued with the belt
folding over on itself as it went through the turn-over rollers.
Subsequent inspection of the new belt by Cyprus and Goodyear
representatives revealed that the new belt consisted of two types,
the 600 piw belt with polyester plies and 500 piw belt with nylon
plies. In early April, the new belt was replaced in its entirety
by the supplier at our request and at, some cost Y.o Empire in an
attempt to cure the problem. However, the folding problem at the
turn-over continued.
Cyprus Empire personnel continued to review the entire A-belt
system and to make adjustments. The orientation oY. the turn-over
rollers were adjusted to various positions in an attempt to correct
the problem. The snub rollers adjacent to the turn-over section
were removed because of wear to the lagging and replaced with
re-lagged rollers. The fold-over problem continue<i.
Cyprus Empire personnel visited the Deserado mine i:o review their
turnover roller installations. This review indi~~ated that the
geometry and operation of the Cyprus turnover rollers were
appropriate for the conditions.
