As a result of the addition of Federal Coal
Lease COC53560, TCC is planning to expand its existing
underground mining operations by approximately 537 acres
(217 ha) in portions of Sec. 36 T.5N, R.87W, and portions
of Sections 31 and 32 T.SN, R.86W (see attached map).
Since a new Federal Coal Lease is involved, our office must
issue a mining plan approval of the action in addition to
the permit revision approval issued by the State of
Colorado, Division of Minerals and Geology (State RA). All
of the planned surface disturbance at the mine has
occurred, and all presently planned facilities are in
place. Entry into the new area will be from the existing
operation, and no new surface facilities or additional
disturbance will be required.
A number of archaeological inventories have been conducted
for the Foidel Creek operation including Rippeteau, 1980;
Killian, 1982; tier, 1979; and Metcalf, 1991. About 40
percent of the expansion area has been inventoried. Three
sites, 5RT32, 5RT34, and SRT345, have been located in the
proposed expansion area. Site SRT32, an open camp site and
site 5RT345; a rockshelter with associated rock art, are
eligible for nomination to the National Register of
Historic Places, while SRT34 is an ineligible lithic
