XVI.
XYII.
Ponds, Impoundments, and Diversions
The only sediment ponds left on site are the main pond at North
Thompson Creek No. 1 and the pond at the refuse pile. There are
also two (2) treatment ponds at the facilities area of the North
Thompson No. 1 mine to treat high iron drainage from the No. 1
portal. The sediment ponds will eventually be removed upon
successful revegetation. The treatment ponds for the high iron
water are proposed for perpetual treatment and not proposed to be
removed.
Explosives - Rules 2.05.3(6)(a), and 4.08
The operation stilt does not use explosives and is in compliance
with the requirements of this section.
Backfillina and
es 2.05.3(6), 2.05.3(9), 2.05.4
At this time, all areas that were originally proposed for
reclamation at the mine site have been backfilled. The two (2)
treatment ponds that were installed to handle drainage that
occurred in 1988 from the No. 1 North Thompson Mine portals are
proposed for perpetual treatment and as such will not be removed.
The only other backfilling that would need to be done are the two
(2) sediment ponds at the North Thompson No. 1 Mine site. A bond
reduction request was processed in 1988 and approved by the
Division fora release of 60~ of the bond for backfilling and
grading work. The operation is in compliance with the requirements
of this section.
XVIII. Coal Processing and Non-Coal Processing Waste - Rules 2,
During the construction of the coal processing waste embankment,
quarterly inspection were made by a Certified Engineer. These
inspections certified that the refuse pile was being constructed
appropriately and that all requirements of the stability analysis
were being met. The refuse pile has since been totally reclaimed
and covered with four (4) feet of non-toxic cover.
XIX. Bonding - Rules 2.05.4(2)(b), and 3.02
The bond amount for the North Thompson Creek Mines has been reduced
because of the completion of structure removal and backfilling and
grading at the mine and loadout sites. The present bond
requirement is X363,620.00. This is more than sufficient to cover
the work remaining which includes reclamation of the sediment ponds
and reconstruction of outlet channels, reclamation of the prime
farmland at the truck dump site, and reestablishment of vegetation
based on a 50% failure rate.
-9-
