4.0 Potential Pollutant SourceslMaterial Inventory 8 BMP's
The most effective control is to limit the amount of potential pollution in the first place. In a sand and
gravel mining operation the large and ongoing site disturbance causes sediment pollution of
stormwater. Consequently every effort has been made to limit disturbance where possible and to
revegetate as soon as practical. A specific list of Potential Pollutant Sources follows in Table 4.1 that
also summarizes the associated Control Measures and Best Management Practices (BMP) for each.
4.1 Table of Potential Pollutant Sources and Control Measures
POTENTIAL SOURCE POLLUTANT CONTROL MEASURES/BMP's
Site Disturbance Sediment -Limit active mining area to 6 acres.
- stripping and stockpiling - Revegetation within 6 months.
of overburden and topsoil -Concurrent reclamation.
Pit Area/Dewatering trench Sediment -Limit active mining area to 6 acres.
- stormwater will drain into -Sediment ponds at each pump ouffall.
dewatering trench and then
be pumped to intermittent
stream
Stockpiles Sediment -Keep product stockpiles in bottom of pit in area of
controlled drainage as much as possible.
- No pitrun stockpile, pitrun shall be loaded directly from
bank.
-Topsoil & overburden stockpiles will be seeded if
undisturbed for more than six months.
- Topsoil stockpiles shall have a slope not steeper than 3:1.
-Combined stockpile limit not to exceed 60,000 tons.
Processing 8 Crushing Sediment -Maximum 50 dayslyear.
-Limit of one active crusher operation.
- Limited crushing hours: Sam - 5pm, Monday through
Friday.
- Crushing to occur in bottom of pit whenever possible.
-Minimize handling, no raw material stockpile, material will
be loaded directly from bank.
Haul Roads Sediment -Haul roads will be chemically stabilized.
- Water truck on call by scale person when required.
- Sediment ponds for upper haul road ditches.
Equipment oil/fuel leaks & OillFuel -All major equipment service performed offsite.
oil changes -Oil changes by trained mechanic with full service truck with
tank for waste oil.
Fuel Tank Spill Diesel fuel -Earthen berms of sufficient size to contain tank capacity,
- a 2000 gallon tank will be
on site for use by the
crusher
