I. REVIEW OF MINE STATUS
The current status and permitting history of the operation is
essentially as described in the June, 1993 renewal findings
document. Mining operations ceased in 1984, portals were sealed in
1986, and the majority of the reclamation within the 21 acre
surface facilities area was completed in 1988. A coal loadout site
located in an industrial area in Delta was reclaimed, and final
bond release was issued in 1987. 1988 reclamation included
facilities removal, backfilling and regrading of the portal bench
and face-up area to approximate original contour, covering of
underground development waste with 4 feet of non-toxic cover, and
revegetation. Phase 1 bond release was approved for the mine site
in October, 1989. An effective cover of perennial shrubs and
grasses has been established on the reclaimed areas at the site,
and sediment pond removal was approved on November 30, 1992,
although to date the sediment pond has not been removed. Remaining
reclamation work includes the sediment pond, lower portion of the
haul road, sediment collection ditches and culverts, and monitoring
wells, and relocation of the lower section of the permanent channel
in the vicinity of the sediment pond.
