200 acres. In addition, there are many small disturbed sites within
the tailing basin, most of which will be covered with tailing by 1483.
Therefore, at this point in time, the Company claims an estimated
disturbance of 300 acres in the entire 1,314 acre tailing deposition
area corridor.
Tailing revegetation research indicates that tailing can be
amended to successfully support vegetation, and, with maintenance
fertilization, eventually develop into a mature soil supporting self-
sustaining vegetation. Still., revegetation of tailing is :zot a
desireable approach if there is a viable practical alternative. The
tailing area at Henderson will be revegetated with the aid of topsoil
stockpiled from within the tailing basin.
Reclamation technology will certainly evolve through the
next 30 years (and we will certainly adopt the most efficient techniques),
but the presently planned sequence for revegetating the ta:Lling to
open forest is:
1. Apply approximately two tons of course lime:>tone
per acre as insurance against long term oxidation.
2. Cover with approximately one foot (6"-18") of topsoil.
(Topsoil alone will significantly reduce oxi.dation.)
3. Spread and mix in 100 pounds of 0-46-0 fertilizer.
4. Drill seed mixture at 20 pounds per acre. (The normal
broadcast seeding rate is 40 pounds per acre:. Drilling
provides similar results at one-half the rage.)
5. Follow with evergreen seedlings and transpl«nt mixture
phased one year after grass, in sequence, ors each
revegetated area.
9-14
