Description of the Environment
The original Findings Document contains a description of the original permit
area which remains accurate. During the first 5-year permit term,
approximately 190 acres were added to the permit area by incidental boundary
changes approved by the Division, There has been and will be no surface
disturbance on the 1,235 acres being added by this permit revision, other than
possible subsidence effects, Surface disturbances associated with the
Southfield Mine are limited to 81 acres at the mine site and 15 acres at the
load-out near Florence, Colorado,
The 1,235 acres to be added to the permit area is land with topography,
vegetation, soils, geology and land use similar to the original permit area,
The westward expansion encompasses some areas of the Wet Mountains of higher
elevation (7,350 feet) than the original permit area, including one area of
Ponderosa Pine-Douglas Fir community (22 acres). The northward expansion
encompasses a third area of riparian woodland community (less then one acre)
in addition to the two riparian areas already inside the permit area. With
these noted exceptions, additional area consists of the same
grassland/woodland communities at the foot of the Wet Mountains as described
in the original Findings Document.
-5-
