tr1s. Sandy Emrich
Page Six
January 20, 1984

In addition to natural regeneration, a shrub planting program
will also continue at the Seneca II Mine to develop habitat "islands"
or concentrated planting areas. The rate of planting will be at a
density of 300 per acre in these areas. As an example, if a 1.5 acre
site is selected, then approximately 450 stems will be planted. A
map will be provided to CMLR to show the location of plantings with
a list showing the type and amount of species planted. The current
permit will be modified to reflect the above change, upon CMLR concurrence.
Nine permanent transects have been established on reclaimed
lands at Seneca II in order to monitor the establishment of shrubs
and the trend of development for these stands. The location of these
transects are shown on the accompanying photo showing the 1983 shrub
planting areas. A 1" = 400' topoq_raphic map will be prepared showing
the actual surveyed location of these transects for future monitoring
program control.
Revege to tion monitoring of reclaimed lands at Seneca II in 1964
will consist of monitoring the nine permanently located shrub establishment
transects. Additionally, a listing of plant species occurring on
reclaimed lands will 6e initiated during transect monitoring this
summer. Shrub densities by species along with height measurements
will be documented during sampling. This information will be compared
to shrub data collected in 1983.
It is hoped that the above discussion will aid in clearing up
the areas addressed in the October 31, 1983 inspection report (III. Comments -
Compliance).
