18 July 1984
Page 4
and erosiona.3•dharacteristics of regraded surface coal mines in Colorado. 11
A complete study of this 10 acre drainage basin will be provided if the staff 1
,~
deems it to be required. ~~ ~~~
V' Lyl,v
TIPPLE AREA, ORPHAN AND NORTH ORPHAN PITS, AND REFUSE PIT ------- ~ ll~
,~J
Included in this proposed plan are portions of Exhibits 11 and 21, contained
in Volume IV of the approved plan. These exhibits indicate use of some of
these areas by neighboring mining operations, by agreement with GEC. A time
period of some 4; years following mid 1982 is suggested in Exhibit 21. It is
suggested that timetables for these areas be subsequent to those of the West
pit, East pit, and the two overburden stockpiles, since those most recently
disturbedareas are the ones most critical in terms of reclamation urgency.
TOPSOIL --------
Topsoil quantities are limited, and it is felt that topsoil may have to be
spread somewhat thinner than that envisioned in the original plan.
At a depth of six inches, the topsoil estimated in the three stockpiles,
(35,000 yd3), would cover 43 of the 48 affected acres. This estimate may be
in error, as the contractor who moved this topsoil remembers it to be some
28,000 yd3.
It would be possible to acheive full coverage with a thinner layer of topsoil, .,~
but this proceedure might raise some question as to the viability of the result- ,R1~,.
ing vegetation. It is possible that some topsoil could be brought in from ad-~'~'
'.
joining mining operations, (a distance of 2 to 3 miles), but it is not known how ~
much would be available at the times it would be needed by GEC.
~'•
REVEGETATIOrt' REQUIREMENTS -------
It is proposed that the revegetation plan as previoulsy approved be used, as it ~~ ~~
is a good mixture far this area. See Attachment A-Vol. IV, and page 2.05-65 in ti~f
Volume I. (Attached)
SEDIMENTATION PONDS AND COMPLETED SLOPES ------
Sediment ponds will be monitored and cleaned when at 60ro of capacity with a yyd3
dragline.
Gullies and rills over nine inches in depth on completed slopes will be staked
with hay or straw bales at 50 ft. intervals to reduce further erosion, and assist
in natural filling. Slopes will be monitored to assure timely restoration.
