COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH,
Rationale - Page 3 Permit No
Water Quality Control Division
CO-0043168
1. Stream Low Flow: (Cont.) three years (lE3}, or chronic, those that
occur for thirty days every three years (30E3). These flows have
been determined for Gregory Culch above the discharge point by the
Water Quality Control Division and are as follows:
Twe Flow
Acute (lE3) 0.02 cfs (0.013.MGD)
Chronic (30E3) 0.02 cfs (0.013 MGD)
2. Impacts on Downstream Water Supplies
There are no known surface water supply intakes located within five
miles downstream on Cregory Gulch or North Clear Creek from this
facility. With compliance of permit limitations, the Golden Mile
Joint Venture facilty discharge should not impact downstream
classified water uses in segment 13.
IV. FACILITY DESCRIPTION
A. Industry Description:
This facility is an existing mine (the Bates Hunter Mine) which is
presently being evaluated for erploratory purposes. The underground
mine has been inactive for some 50 years and is full of groundwater,
which will require a dewatering discharge of this mini water.
According to the permit application, the exploration phase will be
occurring for approximately one year with possible conversion to an
active mining operation then depending upon the exploratory results.
There is potential for gold mining; the principal product is gold ore,
at a projected production rate of 200 tons per day. Some silver ore
will also be mined. The operation will be occurring continually on a
year round basis. The mined ore will be shipped off the property for
gold and other metals recovery at the Bates Hunter Mill which is
approximately one mile northeast of the mine; the location of this mill
is shown on the map in figure 1 of the permit. A site diagram of the
Bates Hunter Mine facility is shown in figure 3 of the permit.
This mine is located in the vicinity of a superfund cleanup area, which
includes the Quartz Hill Tunnel, the Gregory Incline, and the National
Tunnel; these superfund sites are also shown in figure 2 of the permit.
A fuel storage area is shown in figure 3 of the permit. No land
application of the wastewater will be used on site.
B. Wastewater Treatment Facility Description:
The proposed wastewater treatment facility will probably include a
clarifier with chemical precipitation of metals with the addition of
either lime or soda ash; or instead, possibly a greensand zeolite
filter will be used with the addition of potassium permanganate.
