' P¢ge 2. Mined A Reclamation Board. •
adequate opportunity to review and respond to that information
before the Board ' s meeting.
2. The Deepe Farm site is designated as future Open Space on the
Boulder Valley Comprehensive flan. We believe it is appropriate
that reclamation of the site be consistent with this planned
future use . There]'ore , we ask that reclamation planning be
coordinated among the Open Space Board of Trustees of the City
of Boulder, the Mined Land Reclamation Board, and Flatiron
Sand and Gravel Conpany.
j. as Open Space , the property will have extensive use by the
public , and in consequence , the potential fire hazard will be
significant . x recent fire on park land adjacent to the
Turnpike Pit has a--erted us to the seriousness of this problem.
Fire Department personnel indicated that had that fire spread
to the tall grasser on the nearby Turnpike Pit property, it
is likely that homes in South Creek 7 would have sustained
damage before the ]'ire could have been controlled and put out
because the height of those grasses would have provided fuel
for a fast-burning prairie-grass type fire .
To reduce danger from fire to neighboring residential areas ,
we ask that :
a) grasses used in the revegetation be species which will
not grow ta:_1 enough to sustain a prairie-grass type
fire. Grasses which grow no higher than two feet ,
and preferal)ly less (in the words of the Fire Marshall ,
"The shorter the better! ") , are much less likely to
provide enough fuel to sustain such a fire .
b) a buffer zone (minimum width 25 feet) , to serve as a
fire break, be established along the boundary between
the Deepe Farm site and adjacent land to the west ,
the direction in which lie the Table Mesa Mobile Home
Park and several residential neighborhoods . Grass in
this buffer zone should be quite short (to be a good
fire break) and dense (to prevent wind and water erosion) .
This zone should be designed and revegetated as directed
by personnel qualified in the design of grassland fire
breaks.
4. Very high winds in south Boulder are a matter of record and a
fact of life. We ask that plants used in reclamation be those
which will endure :successfully such periods of high winds ,
and assure adequate ground cover to prevent wind erosion on
the site.
5. We request that irrigation not be cut off to future areas to
be mined, and that landscaping in reclaimed areas and ground
cover in future areas of mining be planted and/or maintained
so as to provide a green and dust-free surface during the
normal growing year.
