f • III IIIIIIIIIIIIIII Box 3562
999 I .lder, Colorado 80307
February 16, 1982
Mined Land Reclamation Board RECEIVED
Room 423
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203 FEB 171982
Attention: Mr. Brad Janes MINED LAND RECLAMATION
Specialist
Co!o. Dept. of Natural Resources
Dear Board Members :
Flatiron Sand and Gravel Company has submitted a request to
you for a Reclamation Permit for the Deepe Farm property located
in Sections 9 and 16, 71.1N. , R.70W. , Boulder County, Colorado .
As residents and property owners in the immediate area of that
mining site and the nonconforming Turnpike Pit , we have concerns
about the reclamation of these areas which are discussed below.
In addition, we have other concerns about these two mining sites
which go far beyond what the Board ' s current understanding of its
role is in the permit review process. Should the Board at any
time concern itself with items formerly considered only the purview
of the County, we request the opportunity to express our concerns
to the Board prior to Board action involving either the Turnpike
Pit or the Deepe Farm site.
1 . As can be seen from the enclosed statement of Conditional
Approval of the Special Use adopted by Boulder County Commissioners
January 11 , 1982, (item 17) , prior completion of the reclamation
of the Turnpike Pit, including the lowering and flattening of
the stockpiles , is one of the conditions.
From testimony before the Boulder County Planning Commission
we have been led to believe that Flatiron has encountered
problems in the reclamation of the Turnpike Pit. Since this
property is adjacent to the Deepe Farm site , whatever problems
have occurred on the one may also develop on the other. It
is appropriate to be sure that the Turnpike Pit reclamation
can and will be completed satisfactorily before a permit is
activated for the Deepe Farm site. We believe it is sound
reasoning to be sure that whatever reclamation problems have
developed at the Turnpike Pit are solvable to the appropriate
degree required by the County and the State before the scope
of mining operations in this same area, and one so close to
heavily-populated :^esidential areas , is enlarged onto the
Deepe Farm property.
Therefore , we request that a comprehensive statement concerning
the reclamation of the Turnpike Pit specifying any problems
involved in that reclamation and stating the timetable for
completion of the :reclamation process , including the lowering
and flattening of -the stockpiles , be made available to the
Board and the public prior to the hearing date of April 21-22 ,
1982, so that we , as immediately-concerned citizens , have
