Hyd~olagic Characterization
• Groundwater
- Installed 28 monitoring wells as part of the Response Plan
• Two wells in the Precambrian bedrock
• Four monitoring wells in the Santa Fe Formation
• Sixteen monitoring wells in the Rito Seco alluvium
• Five monitoring wells in the West Pit backfill and one well in the East Pit
backfill.
- Best available water level information indicates that a hydraulic gradient
exists from the backfill to the adjacent alluvium.
- Given the differences in aquifer hydraulic properties, groundwater
preferentially flows from the backfill to the alluvium, which occurs within
a fairly restricted zone on the southeast side of the West Pit.
- Alluvial aquifer flows into the backfill on the east side of the West Pit
- Best estimate of i'iow through the window from the West Pit is
approximately 80 gallons per minute.
