Box 225
Florence, CO 81226
Re: North Area: Soils information pertaining
to available topsoil for Phase IV i; V.
Dear Li,
In January 1983 soil samples were taken for the purpose of determining the amount
of soil suitable for reclamation based on classification and chemical an aylsis.
Four sites were examined shown on soils map # - Ste-Satanta
Topsoil Subsoil
Sites Depth Depth
#1 4-6" 36"
#2 6" 24"
#3 6" 30"
average depth of Satanta topsoil
and subsoil available for
reclamation - 30"
Three soil samples were taken at site #2.
0 - 6" 6 - 18" and 18" - 30"
See chemical analysis chart #
Soil Sample on Site #4
0-6"
See Chemical analysis chart #
The Tecolote and the Pojoaque Variant-Sedillo complex soils have a thin very
gravelly or stony surface layer 0-3" thick with a very gravelly subsoil. These
two soils are very poor sources of topsoil due mainly to the thin surface layer
and the large stones and ,fragmented material on the surface and in the subsoil.
The only available soils in the area that I would recommend for saving as a
suitable plant medium would be from the Satanta Series. This soil is located
on the terrace tops, the amount of suitable top soil decreases nearer the terrace
edges.
In determining the average depth of topsoil that could be used, 30" over the
Satanta Series area would be a realistic figure to use in determining topsoil
yardages.
Si~rely
r~
O Tfte Soil Conservation Service
U is an agency of the
Department of Apr¢ulture
SCS-AS-1
10-79
