steams. These parameters will be monitored on a monthly basis during commercial mining
operations.
Potential leakage from a solution cavity will be monitored by compazative evaluation of injection
and production fluid (and/or mass) flow rates and nitrogen consumption, which will be
automatically reported to a master control system. The nitrogen gas cap will be monitored daily
by measuring nitrogen consumption and production fluid pressure.
5.2 Solution and Cooling Ponds
The solution and cooling ponds associated with the test mine facility are protected against
leakage by a double geosynthetic liner and geonet leak detection and collection system (LDCS).
During commercial production operations, this system will be monitored twice per shift. The
freeboazd of the dams will be measured once per day. During the temporary suspension period,
the LDCS will be checked quarterly in conjunction with water level measurements and water
quality samples collected from the alluvial monitoring wells 21-2, 28-1, and 21-5.
6.0 Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC)
A State ofColorado-certified laboratory will be used for all ground water and surface water
quality analyses for all designated sites and frequencies specified in this plan. Quality
Assurance/Quality Control samples will be collected to verify field sampling techniques and
laboratory procedures. American Soda field sampling methods and certified laboratory analysis
were verified by the USGS in the first yeaz of commercial operations. Samples were collected
simultaneously by USGS field personnel and sent to the USGS analytical laboratory to perform
third-part validation of water quality data. Comparison of data results and QA/QC between the
USGS and American Soda indicate that American Soda's sampling and laboratory analytical
program aze very compazable to the programs coordinated and managed by the USGS. No
deficiencies were identified.
6.1 Ground Water Sampling Methods
Ground water sampling will be performed in accordance with the standard operating procedures
(SOP) developed for the site. The SOP for ground water sampling is included as Appendix C
and provides detailed instructions on the following topics:
Equipment
Instrument Calibration
Well purging
Sample collection
Sample filtration
Field QA/QC procedures
The wells are equipped with dedicated sampling equipment. In the event dedicated equipment is
inoperable, clean, decontaminated equipment will be used for all sampling activities.
Decontamination will be performed in accordance with the procedures given in Appendix D -
Standazd Operating Procedure for Equipment Decontamination.
Draft Modification No. 9 UIC Area Permit No. CO30858-00000 Page 34 of 44
