The pinyon-juniper community was sampled with a 0.25 m2 quadrat for production. This is an inaporopriat~ technique to employ given the spacing between under- story vegetation in this community. Sample variance is greatly increased due to the number of quadrats with no vegetation. Sampling for herbaceous production in pre-mine and reference areas of the pinyon-juniper community yielded levels of confidence much less than SO a. For the above reasons, the pinyon-juniper area will need to be resampled for herbaceous production using a methodology deemed adequate by the Division.
